MTB Guide to Hiking Trails

City of Walnut Creek photo

Shell Ridge is Walnut Creek’s largest open space. Near the end of Oak Grove Road, the park has 1,430 acres and 31 miles of trails. The park got its name from marine fossils left when the ocean receded. It is the site of Borges Ranch, a historic cattle ranch, and was the home of James P. Howe, a distinguished foreign correspondent for the Associated Press who died in 1970. The park allows dogs as long as they are leashed.
